Drops are flexible to dose and easy to swallow. Here you can compare vitamin D3 drops with and without vitamin K2 and find out what to look out for in the dose per drop.

Advantages of drops

Vitamin D is fat-soluble. In drops it is usually dissolved in an oil, often MCT oil from coconut. This makes it easier for people who dislike swallowing tablets and allows fine dosing: the amount can be adjusted by the number of drops. One bottle often lasts many months.

On the other hand, dosing is less precise than with tablets if the dropper does not drip evenly. Hold the bottle upright when dosing and count the drops carefully.

What to look for in drops

The key factor is the amount per drop. Many products contain 1,000 IU per drop, some 5,000 IU or more. With highly concentrated drops, a single drop already exceeds the maximum level of 20 µg (800 IU) per day that the BfR recommends for food supplements. So choose a concentration that matches your planned daily intake.

  • Check IU or µg per drop and the recommended number of drops per day
  • Carrier oil: MCT oil, olive oil or other vegetable oils
  • With or without vitamin K2 (MK-7)
  • Pipette or dropper insert for even drops
  • Note shelf life and storage instructions after opening

Drops for children

There are specially dosed vitamin D drops for infants and children. Adult products with 1,000 IU or more per drop are not suitable for them. Vitamin D for infants and toddlers should always be agreed with the paediatrician, as prophylaxis – sometimes combined with fluoride – has often already been prescribed.

Store drops away from light and out of children's reach so that children cannot open the bottle themselves.
