A multivitamin promises everything in one tablet. Here you can compare A–Z products from drugstore to premium brands and find out how to recognise a sensibly formulated product.

Who might consider a multivitamin

If you eat a varied diet, you are usually well supplied with most vitamins and minerals. A multivitamin can be a supplement when your diet is one-sided for a while – for example with a poor appetite in old age, a severely restricted choice of foods, or during stressful periods with little time to cook. It does not replace a balanced diet.

Pregnant women and women trying to conceive have particular needs, for example for folic acid and iodine. There are special products for this, which you should choose together with your gynaecologist.

Reading the label: nutrient reference values

The pack states the amount per daily dose for each nutrient and its share of the nutrient reference value (NRV) as a percentage. A well-formulated multivitamin covers many nutrients at around the daily requirement without greatly exceeding any individual value. Very high percentages are not a sign of quality.

  • Check the percentage of the nutrient reference value (NRV) for each nutrient
  • No extreme overdoses of individual vitamins
  • Vitamin A and beta-carotene: watch the amount
  • Iron only if you really need it
  • Additives, colourings and sugar content (for gummies)

Be careful with beta-carotene, vitamin A and iron

The BfR advises smokers against food supplements containing beta-carotene, because studies observed an increased risk of lung cancer at high intakes. You should also be cautious with vitamin A, especially during pregnancy. Iron is not useful for everyone: men and post-menopausal women usually get enough from food.

If you combine several products, for example a multivitamin with vitamin D and magnesium, add up the amounts so that you don't unknowingly exceed the recommendations.

Important notice

Food supplements are no substitute for a balanced, varied diet or a healthy lifestyle. If you have a pre-existing condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take medication regularly, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking them. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake stated on the pack. The information on this page is for general guidance only and is no substitute for individual advice.
