Vitamin B12 is the most important supplement for anyone on a vegan diet. Here you can compare tablets and drops and find out what the different forms of B12 mean.

Why vitamin B12 matters

Vitamin B12 contributes to normal red blood cell formation, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal function of the immune system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It occurs in appreciable amounts almost exclusively in animal foods.

The DGE gives an estimated value of 4 µg per day for adults. According to the DGE, people on a vegan diet must reliably obtain vitamin B12 from a supplement or fortified foods. Intake can also become tight for people who absorb B12 less well – for instance in older age or with certain gastrointestinal conditions or medicines. Whether there is a deficiency can be clarified by a doctor through blood tests.

Forms and dosage

Cyanocobalamin is the classic, stable and well-researched form. Methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are forms that occur actively in the body; hydroxocobalamin is often used in injections. Many products combine several forms. A scientifically proven advantage of any particular form for healthy people has not been clearly shown.

Because the body can absorb only part of a single dose, many products contain considerably more than the daily requirement. The BfR recommends a maximum level of 25 µg vitamin B12 per day in food supplements. Higher-dose products with 500 or 1,000 µg are common – it is best to discuss taking them with a doctor, especially if a deficiency needs to be corrected.
